Prep Time 15 minutes mins
Cook Time 15 minutes mins
1 Mixing tool of your choice e.g., Food processor, stand mixer, hand mixer, or a mason jar with a lid
1 Fine mesh strainer/sieve
1 Large glass bowl sieve should be able to rest on the rim
1 Cheesecloth optional
1 Mixing spoon
- 3 cups Heavy cream
- 5 tbsp Ice cold water
- Prefered add-ins (optional) e.g., salt, herbs, honey, etc.
Using a Food Processor, Stand Mixer, or Hand Mixer
Pour the heavy cream into the mixing bowl.
Start the mixer on low speed and gradually increase it to medium-high.
Mix until the cream thickens and separates into butter and buttermilk. This process usually takes 5-10 minutes.
Once the butterfat clumps together and separates from the buttermilk, stop mixing.
Using a Mason Jar to Make By Butter Hand
Pour the heavy cream into the mason jar, filling it about one-third full.
Tightly seal the jar with the lid.
Shake the jar vigorously for approximately 10-15 minutes until the butterfat solidifies.
Separating the Butter and Buttermilk
Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or sieve lined with cheesecloth to separate the butter from the liquid (buttermilk).
Gently press the butter to remove any excess liquid.
Don't throw out the buttermilk! Pour it into an airtight container and store it in the fridge for use in other recipes!
With the butter ball still in the cheesecloth-lined sieve, rinse it under ice cold water to remove any remaining buttermilk. This helps to preserve the butter's freshness.
Transfer the butter to a clean bowl and knead it with a spoon or your hands to remove any additional liquid. Discard the liquid.
Optional: Add salt or other flavorings to taste and mix well.
